Band of boys
“The Boys in the Band” by Mart Crowley is Riccarton Players’ next production, which opens on August 1. The play deals with homosexuality. The setting is a birthday party for Harold, an exclusively male gathering, which is upset by the arrival of Alan, played by Gary Johnston, who is not a homosexual and very antihomosexual. Fears and failures are brought to the surface and they are not resolved but lived with and endured.
It is the first time the & has been performed in tchurcb and it is directed by John Jefferies, of Elmwood Players. Mr Jefferies also plays the part of Harold. Moreen Eason co-directs. The'rest of the characters are Michael (Judd Millner) who hosts the party, his neurotic friend, Donald (Ross Gumbley), Larry (Phil Foster) and his lover, Hank (Richard Capstick), Emory (Howard Thompson), "the mincing little swish,” Bernard (Neil Gudsell) and Cowboy (Jason Ealey). -y
