All-Canterbury final in quiz

An all-Canterbury final will determine the winner of the natural history quiz, “What On Earth,” on One on Sunday, at 7.55 p.m. The Environment Centre team of David Given (a D.S.I.R. botanist), Alison Holcroft (a University of Canterbury classics lecturer), and Omar Yusaf (an Aranui High School sixth former) will face the Royal

Forest and Bird Protection Society. This team is led by Ken Hughey (a researcher in the entomology department at Lincoln College), Maureen Vance, and Peter Langlands (a third former at Cashmere High School). A Television New Zealand natural history grant of $6OOO is at stake in the final with both teams having al-

ready won $lOOO in their heat and respective semifinal rounds. The Environment Centre will put its winnings towards a native plant nursery to encourage interest, particularly among school children, in native plants. It also hopes to train people in the propagation of plants and growing techniques. The Royal Forest and

Bird Protection Society will use its money to fence off forest remnants in the Canterbury area to allow regeneration to occur. Such areas would be under the Queen Elizabeth II Trust and be available for use by interested parties. “What On Earth” will be replaced by a new series of "Mastermind.”
