Aust. unions lift ban

NZPA-AAP Sydney Five Australian maritime unions lifted their bans on foreign ships yesterday and agreed that no more bans would be imposed pending the outcome of discussions with the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Columbus Shipping Line, expected to be held this week. the Seamen’s Union secretary, Pat Geraghty, said the lifting of bans followed the agreement by the West Ger-man-owned Columbus Ship-

ping Line in the Federal Court in Sydney yesterday to withdraw all legal action against four of the unions and members and officials of the Seamen’s Union. The relevant section outlaws secondary boycotts. The back-down by Columbus was conditional upon the lifting of bans on foreign ships by these four unions and by radio-operators who had banned all radio communications with 'the Columbus Shipping Line.

The unions repeated their support for the campaign to expand and develop Australia’s shipping industry and their total opposition to “flag of convenience” registrations, Mr Geraghty said. The bans by maritime unions, which have stranded foreign cargo ships in Australian ports for several days, were part of a campaign aimed at increasing the proportion of Australian crews on ships trading with North America.
