Death of former jockey

PA Invercargill A leading 1940 s jockey, Patrick Joseph (“Ripper”) Boyle, died in Invercargill at the week-end. He was 61. Mr Boyle was apprenticed in the late 1930 s to Andy McKay at Riverton, but increasing weight soon forced him to team up with his father, who trained as large team of jumpers at Heddon Bush. The 1944 Great Western Steeplechase on the Bill Hazlett-owned and trained Noko was one of Mr Boyle’s major wins as a rider. His earlier victories included the 1940 and 1943 Otago Steeplechases on Ballybrit and Gay Boa, and late in his career he won the Otago Hurdles on Desert Trek. Other good jumpers with which Mr Boyle was associated were Pride O’Central, Surcoat, Minton, and Merry Simon.
