Slip to be cleared

Mud and debris appear to be the likely cause of a blockage to the entrance of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s patent slip, according to the resident engineer, Mr Malcolm Jones. The slip has not been used for. six months after a blockage was found to have fouled the cradle used to haul boats from the water. Mr Jones said divers believed rock and debris in mud below the low water level were obstructing the cradle’s movement. A mechanical digger would be used next week to remove the debris and the slip would be back in use “as soon as possible,” he said. The last fishing vessel to use the slip in December, 1983, had to be pulled from the cradle by tug. There are two private slips at the port, however, the Harbour Board’s slip is the only one capable of handling larger fishing vessels. The inshore patrol craft H.M.N.Z.S. Moa made a brief call at Lyttelton yesterday for refuelling. The Moa is the first of the Navy’s four new patrol craft to have been built by Whangarei Engineering and Construction, Ltd. The vessel is based with the Dunedin reserve division. ‘ The second patrol craft H.M.N.Z.S. Kiwi, which will be based at Lyttelton, has completed her second work-up in Auckland and is undergoing maintenance. She is expected in port on August 11 and will .be commissioned on September 2.
