Air pollution
Sir, — Anne Thompson says that most air pollution in Christchurch is from vehicles. However, City Council technologists say “about 67 per cent of total annual smoke occurs in the winter period and 70 per cent of winter smoke is domestic in origin ... the major single cause ... burning solid fuels ... in open fires and other solid fuel burners.” Elderly folk living on modest budgets must be confused when they get free wood and coal from service clubs, because there seems to be no alternative help in providing free-electric-ity, to assist the concept of clean air zones. It has been reported that households containing occupants 60 years old or over were more likely to use electricity alone for heating. I believe that most people over 60 would prefer to use electricity for heating because it is more convenient, clean and safe. — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. July 21, 1984.
