Basketball to Butlers

Butler Auto Spares remained unbeaten at the head of the Canterbury, senior basketball championship with a clear-cut 93-81 win over Admiral Lodge-Checkers at Cowles Stadium last evening.

Butlers is now unbeaten in three championship games and its display was the best of the evening. Canterbury’s latest New Zealand representative, lan Webb, had a game-high of 32 points, but Checkers, led by the Canterbury captain, Clyde Huntley, made Butlers struggle in the fist half to lead, 45-43, at half-time.

However, with strength and skill, Butlers extended its margin in the second half. Last year’s champions, Vistalite High School Old Boys, had to wait until two minutes from full-time before establishing a four-point winning margin against a resilient Aranui side, holding on to win, 77-33. Old Boys led 41-31 at half-time, but fell behind by four points with five minutes remaining. In the third game, Edgeware Service Station-Mairehau’s persistency paid off when coming from behind to beat Busi-nessworld-University, 75-69.

University led by only one point, 42-41, at half-time, but looked the better side in this period. However, University lost its rhythm and also its composure in the second spell and Mairehau made the most of the lapses, with a top score of 30 points by Brian Fifield. Scores:
