Andrew James wins Addington trial

By

' JEFF SCOTT

The C2 pacer, Andrew James, now trained at West Melton by Robin Butt, was successful when pitted against the C 3 and C 4 pacers in the main heat at the Addington trials yesterday. Rising six, the son of Good Chase and a former New Zealand Oaks winner in Swift Princess, was caught wide early but gained the lead over the last 1700 m. He had enough in reserve to hold out a solid finish by Castle Del, back to the 700 m, by a neck, with Roydon Trump, which trailed the winner from the 1700 m, a head back third. Hoss, three and four back on the inner battled on for fourth, half a neck away. Andrew James paced the 2600 m in 3min 32.35, the closing 400 m in 30.55. He showed promise from

lan Cameron’s Rangiora team last season, winning twice, but has been unplaced in three starts this term, one for Cameron and two for Trevor Thomas, who has since relinquished his professional trainer’s licence. Boydie Boy, a rising three-year-old brother to this season’s Wellington Cup winner, Joy Boy, was a respectable winner of the two-year-old heat over 2000 m. Also trained at West Melton by Bill Dickson, Boydie Boy was caught three wide early but led over the last 1200 m, coming clear to win by two lengths. The son of Boyden Hanover paced a moderate 2min 44.4 s for the distance, quickening the tempo over the last 800 m in Imin 2.7 s and the last 400 m in 30.8 s and was travelling easily at the finish. Lively Too, which settled third, finished on a shade

for second, with Timely Patron, which was won in an IHC horse raffle earlier this year and placed in Colin de Filippi’s Ladbrooks team, finishing on a shade for third after trailing on the outer. The converted pacer, General Armbo, finished best after trailing three back on the inner from the 1800 m, to narrowly beat the pacemaker, Bright Dawn, in the Cl and C2 pacers’ heat in 3min 34.8 s (2600 m Isotronic ran on late to get up for third. Rona’s Pride outfinished Globe Abbe to win the ClC 3 trotters’ heat in a slow 3min 47.15, the leaders trotting their closing 400 m in 29.65. Other winners of the CO heats over 2600 m were Rocky Spot (3min 38.35), Gold Row (3min 35.65), Top Abbe (3min 33.45) and the trotter, Gamekeeper 3min 41.45.
