Skelton’s 29th for season
From J. J. BOYLE Wellington Bill Skelton’s fifty-third birthday draws near, but he still has his aims and objectives in his great career as a race-rider. “I’ve had a season with less than 30 wins, and that was my 29th for the present season,” Skelton said after he won the First Juvenile Handicap on Driftwood at Trentham yesterday. Driftwood, a bay colt by Harrisand from the stable .of S. T. Edwards, at Wanganui, found enough for the vigorous Skelton to beat Love A Handle by half a length and others easily. Skelton rode his first
winner at Wingatui in 1947.
His first Trentham winner was Indiana, which triumphed in a hack race on the course for the Washdyke stable of the late "Put” Hogan in the late 19405. His win on Driftwood yesterday was his 196th on the course. Skelton was back in his street clothes soon after he won on Driftwood yesterday, and the popular little former southerner was being congratulated on all sides. “It’s good to have your goals — now I’m after that 30th win for the season,” Skelton said.
