Sports car from Japan
Toyota’s mid-engined twoseater sports coupe, the MR2, was launched in Japan last month. The MR2 (it stands for Midship Runabout 2-seater) was first seen as the SV3 at last year’s Tokyo motor show and is Japan’s first mid-engined sports car and, indeed, Japan’s first true sports car in 15 years.
It is powered by the 4AGEU 97kW (130 b.h.p.) four-valves-per-cylinder 1600 cu cm engine already familiar in the Toyota Corolla GT. However, it is mounted transversely just ahead of the rear wheels.
Toyota hopes to sell about 2000 MR2s a month in Japan. Exports will begin next year and current plans are to sell 3000 a month in the United States and 300 to 400 a month in Europe. British prices are expected to range from £5lOO to £B4OO ($10,775 to $17,750).
