Rare foal born to surrogate

NZPA-AAP London The first Przewalski wild horse foal to be born after the transfer of an embryo to a domestic pony has gone on show in Britain.

The colt, Tarot, was born recently to his four-year-old surrogate dam, a New Forest pony called Honey Pot, according to “The Times.” He was displayed at the Thoroughbred Breeders’

Association Equine Fertility Unit in Cambridge. The conservation experiment in inter-species transfer was done by the unit and London Zoo’s Institute of Zoology. The embryo, o.3mm in diameter, was collected in July last year from a Przewalski mare seven days after its conception. The Przewalski horse, which is extinct in the wild, has a population of 500 in zoos.
