Starvation

Sir,—l was appalled at the positioning of the article on starvation on Page 22 in “The Press” (June 27). The crisis was likened to “destructive effects comparable with a nuclear weapons exchange.” Have we become so apathetic towards the plight of starving fellow human beings that what is happened to them doesn’t warrant the same media coverage that the political and financial positions of us over-fed, spoilt and selfish Kiwis commands? New Zealand is in a position to help in the plight of its fellow small nations. I sincerely hope “The Press” will follow its obligations to promote awareness about the unfortunate “have nots” of our world, with more vigour in the future. — Yours., etc., S. HERBET, Westport. June 28, 1984.

TV ‘Peeping Tom’

Sir,—l support D. G. Heard’s letter (“The Press,” June 28) regarding crime, violence and ag-, gression as depicted in television programmes. Constant viewing dulls the children’s minds to the horror of what they are watching and instead it becomes the norm. What we feed our children largely determines the response we will receive from them as adolescents as is borne out in the’ increased violence being experienced on New Zealand streets. If sufficient parents world-wide revolted against television standards I am sure the producers would adapt to meet the popular demand.—Yours, etc.,

S. I. EDEN. June 29, 1984.
