The A.N.Z.U.S. debate
Sir,—War by accident, from human error, is far more to be feared than a missile clash planned by a super-Power. “The Press” and “Time” magazine have featured some of the many nuclear failures that have occurred already. Firms manufacturing nuclear equipment now have a lean time after many cancellations of orders. Already some examples of drink, drugs,, sheer carelessness, or faulty systems have scarred the record. Suppression of news prevents our knowing how many of these were in the Soviet Union. Mr Reagan’s aim to get the U.S.S.R. to agree to zero missile storage seems strange when the United States says, it works towards winning a nuclear war. Mr Bob Hawke admits 7 Aus-
tralia takes a risk. So do we with the present form of the A.N.Z.U.S. agreement. Why not amend it? — Yours, etc.,
