Southland beaten
PA Paeroa Thames Valley had to throw up a solid wall of defence in the final minutes of a representative rugby match to beat Southland 2126 on Saturday. Valley had first use of the wind and led 15-10 at halftime. The game was played in fine weather on a heavy
ground. In the second spell Southland failed to use its impressive three-quarter, line ai®d relied on These tactics failed and
eventually led to the side’s downfall. For the Valley, Handley scored a try, which was converted by Glen Dalgety. Dalgety also kicked five penalties. For Southland, Kilpatrick and Laidlaw scored tries and Eric Todd kicked a conversion and two penal-
ties. In the curtain-raiser, the mid-Canterbury under-19 team beat the Thames Valley under-19 nBe, 25-7.
