Robinson wins tennis award
One of the most dedicated of Canterbury’s sporting stalwarts, Hugh Robinson, has won the prestigious tennis award of “Personality of the Year." He received his award at a function run by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association at Wilding Park last evening. In the season just ended Robinson won the Canterbury closed singles championship and captained the provincial men's team in the Wilding Shield contest at Lower hutt. In the course of this engagement he gained a straight-sets win over Phillip Seeman, thus gaining revenge for an earlier defeat by the strapping left-hander in the final of the Marlborough Open. Robinson, who farms in the Woodend district, has been prominent in North Canterbury tennis and rugby, as well as playing regularly for United in the city senior competition for nine consecutive seasons. In singles matches for the club he has built an impressive record of 73 wins in 94 matches, playing most at either No. 1 or No. 2. For four of the last five seasons, Robinson has re-
presented Canterbury in the wilding Shield competition, and he is a former national junior doubles champion. He won the title in association with Stephen Harley, the first person to receive the “Personality of the Year” award.
The criteria for the award are achievement, personality, and general work for tennis. The judges were drawn from the ranks of the C.L.T.A.'s competitions committee, the selec-, tors, and the news media.
