Dispute at sugar refinery
PA Auckland Chelsea, the only sugar refinery in New Zealand, may close this week because of a’’ dispute over plans to change from oilfired to gas-fired boilers. The managing director of the New Zealand Sugar Company, Mr Alec Brennan, said that oil stocks were expected to run out in a day or two, and it was planned to then switch to natural gas. He said three boiler attendants were refusing to fire the boilers with gas in support of a claim they had lodged for a “gas” payment. The secretary of the Stationary Engine Drivers’ Union, Mr George Hogarth, said the union had signed a number of similar agreements with other employers.
“This claim is in line with those agreements,” he said. Union members will stop work on Friday to discuss the dispute.
