Jerseys banned

PA Dunedin Dunedin’s University A rugby team has been instructed by the Otago Rugby Football Union not to again wear the controversial sponsors’ jerseys given to University clubs throughout the country. The jerseys, which have the sponsors’ name — Golden Breed — down the sleeves and across the back, were worn by University A in its match against Pirates last Saturday.

Other University teams were stopped from wearing them last Saturday. The Otago union told the club it was in contravention of International Rugby Board regulations by allowing the jerseys to be worn. The relevant rule reads: “The name of an advertiser, as distinct from the manufacturer’s logo must not appear on jerseys or shorts. The manufacturer’s logo may appear on jerseys and shorts provided it does not exceed 6cm x 6cm in size.”
