Always looking ahead
“Always look ahead and try to keep one step in front of your competitors,” is the motto of Mr Ron Day, Christchurch branch manager of Briscoes. Mr Day first began work for Briscoes as a message boy in December, 1955, after leaving Christchurch Technical College. The firm was then still situated at the corner of Cashel and Madras streets. He thought nothing of riding his bicycle as far as the Styx Bridge, in what is now Redwood, with as many as
five tyres in the basket on the front, Mr Day recalls.
Other duties while at Cashel Street included some time in the shipping department as storeman and salesman of builders’ hardware. In April, 1969, Briscoes shifted to its present premises in Salisbury Street, where he continued as salesman, and also spent a period as traveller calling on builders in and around Christchurch. The premises saw the introduction of the self-ser-
vice warehouse in 1975, with Mr Day being appointed warehouse manager. Then, in October, 1982, be was promoted to Christchurch branch manager.
