U.N. experts set for Iran

Mr Perez de Cuellar “categorically and strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons.” Official United Nations sources said that experts were being contacted, primarily in Europe, and would go as soon as possible to Teheran to examine hospitalised soldiers believed to nave been gassed. t Iran’s' request to the United Nations for experts to be sent was based on .a 1962 General Assembly resolution strengthening a 1955 Geneva Convention that prohibited the use of chemical or bacteriological weapons.
The 1982 motion was aimed implicitly at the use of chemical weapons in Afghanistan and Kampuchea.,
Although the Soviet Union voted against the 1982 resolution, it did not oppose Mr Perez de Cuellar’s decision to send experts to Teheran.
Diplomats viewed Mr Perez de Cuellar’s decision as a victory for Teheran,
