U.N. experts set for Iran

NZPA-AFP New York United Nations experts will leave as soon as possible for Iran “to ascertain the facts” concerning Iraq’s alleged use of chemical weapons against Iran, a spokesman for the Secre-tary-General, Mr Javier Perez de Cuellar, said. “The Secretary-General is extremely concerned and feels he has a moral obligation” to act on Iran’s accusations, the spokesman said. Mr Perez de Cuellar “categorically and strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons.” Official United Nations sources said that experts were being contacted, primarily in Europe, and would go as soon as possible to Teheran to examine hospitalised soldiers believed to nave been gassed. t Iran’s' request to the United Nations for experts to be sent was based on .a 1962 General Assembly resolution strengthening a 1955 Geneva Convention that prohibited the use of chemical or bacteriological weapons.
