Firestone wins contest
Firestone won the inaugural Radio Avon business house twilight cricket competition when the final round of matches were completed at Hospital Corner last week.
A narrow win over Waitaki N.Z.R. was enough to give Firestone first place in the A grade section. It finished two points clear of '(The Press” team. Tuesday competition: Wrightson N.M.A. 155/6 (D. Jordan 36 retired, G. McAuley 26, M. Herd 36 retired; I. Gamblin 2/21) beat L. D. Nathan 85/5 (Gamblin 22 not out, G. St John 24; J. Grant 3/ 6).
“The Press” 131/4 (J. Burning 36 retired, K. Tutty 22 not out) beat Nuts, Bolts and Screws 119/7 (G. Stuart 40 retired, R. Robertson 31, K. Burns 26; Durning 4/29). Firestone 104/6; (A. Morton 31 not out; G. Robertson 3/15, B. Gray 2/21) beat Waitaki N.Z.R. 102 (Gray 28; E. Pearce 12/18, M-. Emerson 2/16). The Skellerup Industries Player of the Night award went to John Durning (“The Press”) while the Avonhead Tavern Player of the Match •awards went to Mike Herd (Wrightson) and Arthur Morton (Firestone). Norma Thompson, of the Christchurch Transport Board won the Player of the Night' award, while Bob Grace (Deloitte, Haskins and Sells) and Steven Vivian (Tai Tapu) won the other match awards.
