Chilly lakes swims a first
Special correspondent Tekapo A marathon swimmer from California, Lynne Cox, became the first person to swim Lakes Pukaki, Ohau and Tekapo at their widest parts on Saturday. By doing so she has dispelled the belief that these lakes are too cold to swim in. She estimated the Pukaki water was 9 deg. The Tekapo power station recorded a temperature of 12.5 deg. at Tekapo. Miss Cox, aged 27, said so long as she kept her body moving her muscle energy gave off heat to combat the cold. Her body is plump, but not fat, as if specially built for this kind of swimming. She ate little while swimming — three cups of cocoa, one chocolate fish and a fruit drink. The times recorded were: Lake Pukaki, from Glentanner to ■ the Clay Cliffs, 5.2 km, Ihr 49min; Lake Ohau, from Parsons Creek to Greta Creek, 4.Bkm, Ihr 40min 14s; Lake Tekapo, from Cass River to Richmond homestead, 4km, Ihr 23min 14s.
