Retail sales up 11.4 p.c.

New Zealanders are spending more at this time of the year than they did last year. The total value of retail sales during October was 11.4 per cent higher than for last October, the Department of Statistics said yesterday. During the month, $1,441.6 million worth of sales were recorded, up from last year’s $1,294.2 million. After adjustments for seasonal changes and the differing number of trading

days in each month, this October’s sales were 13.7 per cent above last year. The biggest increases were in automotive, fuel and repairs (up 19.6 per cent), furniture (up 16.7 per cent) and restaurants and take-aways (up 14.3 per cent), the department said. The smallest gains were in the meat trade (up 0.4 per cent) and hardware (up 0.6 per cent). The increase in sales over September 1983 was 0.7 per cent.
