Piscine presence “PRESIDING” over the Rakaia River conservation order hearing, since being presented as evidence on the first day, is this 21.11 kg quinnat salmon. The salmon was caught at the mouth of the Rakaia River on February 2, 1978, by Mr Ray French and belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. It was produced in evidence on December 6 by Dr Gordon Glova, of the Fisheries Research Division. The hearing for a conservation order, applied for by the acclimatisation societies, finished yesterday. During the seven days of evidence the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority — and the salmon — have heard from environmentalists, anglers, farmers, conservationists, irrigation and hydro experts and scientists. — Hearing, page 26. Happy anniversary THE FOUNDING of Canterbury will be celebrated in style \ tomorrow on the province’s'anniversary day.
More than 160 people will attend a special anniversary function at the Provincial Buildings. The Canterbury Promotion Council has organised the gathering and invited members of Parliament, mayors and chairmen of local bodies, businessmen, historians and others. Included are Alex Wyllie, “Miss Canterbury” (Donna Feringa), and the Wizard. A toast to the province will be drunk with a locallyproduced wine. To commemorate the day anyone with a flagpole should fly the New Zealand Flag or the Union Jack, ays.-sie
executive officer of the council, Mr Bruce Dunstan. Sell-out “FOOTROOT FLATS,” the stage adaptation of Murray Ball’s cartoon of the same name, is proving to be a sell-out for the Court Theatre. Most performances are booked out a week in advance and two extra matinee shows, on Saturday, December 17, and Wednesday, 21, have been arranged. The show’s owners are still considering whether to extend the season at the Court or to take the show on tour
within New Zealand or to Australia. Zoopooz ORANA Park staff, using a secret recipe, have produced a general fertiliser which is being sold to raise funds for the Kiwi House appeal. The fertiliser, Zoopooz, available in standard and jumbo packs, has been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and will be on sale from December 26 at the park. Each pack comes with instructions (to be read carefully). Among the nine in-
structions listed are: Apply sparingly for even growth (chainsaw should be kept handy if large quantities are applied at once); the best results are obtained when Zoopooz is applied during a full moon, when the watercress is in full bloom and the whitebait are running in the Styx River, no smell, no flies, no taste; the management denies that the contents of this packet resembles any well-known New Zealand breakfast cereal; all complaints regarding this material should be directed to the animal concerned and no correspondence can be entered into. Standard packs will sell at $l, jumbo packs at $2.50. Church army? READERS of yesterday’s “Diary” could be forgiven for thinking the Church of England has extended its activities into the realm of the military. The item about the soldier who had been absent without leave for 35 years gave his regiment as the Royal Anglican Regiment. It should have been the Royal Anglian Regiment %
