Shipping news

Surveys have been recently completed on three vessels owned by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The harbour dredge Te Whaka was dry-docked for an underwater survey early last month. Surveys this year on the dredge, included the tail shaft, which required the fitting of new lignum vitae woods to the outer bearing. A sheathing plate was also fitted to the vessel’s forward keelson. Other overhaul work included the renewal of the port freshwater tanks bulkhead, the renewal of 10 reserve frames in the starboard bunker, renewal of section of bulwarks and sandblasting of the after deck. The dredge was moved from dry dock on November 24. The survey of the tug Canterbury involved the inspection of the port generator, the electric driven compressor, and two coffer dams. The board’s pilot launch Wairangi was also dry docked for her annual survey and overhaul, on November 22. The vessel’s engine was given a top overhaul and her forecastle painted. The tugs Godley, Canterbury, and the pilot launch Wairangi were put through their fire drills recently, with water pumped through monitors and hoses. The Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, reported all live-saving equipment and fire-fighting apparatus to be in good order and condition. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Dunedin (S.C.N.Z.)
