Arsonist strikes a second time
PA Tauranga An arsonist has struck in Mount Maunganui for the second time this week — yesterday a shed at the rear of the Mount Maunganui police station was damaged by fire early yesterday morning. The head of the C. 1.8. in Tauranga, Detective SeniorSergeant F. B. McWilliam, said there was reason to believe petrol was used to start the fire. The Mount Maunganui Borough Council chambers were set alight and badly damaged early on Monday morning. On December 31, 1981, an L.P.G. tank, the Mount
Maunganui Surf Club rooms, and the Omanu Golf Club house were fired by an arsonist who was never traced. The commander of the Tauranga police sub-dis-trict, Chief Inspector B. E. Wells, said yesterday that those earlier fires were being considered in present investigations. The police station fire began about 12.30 a.m. and charred the walls and interior of the store shed. The police had the fire under control by the time the fire brigade arrived, according to the sergeant in charge of the station, Sergeant R. B. McNaughton.
