Shortage of lamb for export
PA Wellington A slow killing rate has created a shortage of lamb for export, forcing the Meat Board to load ships for Iran in preference to Britain, and making a container ship idle, said a board spokesman, Mr Barrie Saunders. Mr Saunders said that with large stocks already backlogged in Britain, the board had decided to concentrate on fulfilling its fixed contract to supply Iran with 140,000 tonnes of lamb. The Maritime Trader, which was to have carried meat to Britain, has instead stayed at Wellington. A lamb-kill rate of 1.96 million was achieved in the week ended December 3 compared with a rate of 2.74 million in the corresponding week in 1982.
