Rental controls

Sir,—l agree with Stan Wood (April 2) that times are tough for landlords. But they are tough for other people and the solutions to our problems must take into account the position of all interested parties. If we have no further rent controls after the freeze, many people who have lived for a year on depressed wages, suddenly will be faced with massive increases in rents and other costs. They will be worse off than ever before. The suggestions contained in my submissions to the Minister of Housing of controlled rent increases (not a freeze) coupled with tax reforms and low interest government

finance to landlords for special purposes, take into account the interests of both landlords and tenants.—Yours, etc., ANDREW ALSTON, Chairperson, The Tenants’ Protection Association (Christchurch) Inc. April 3, 1983.
