Protest to Queen

PA Wellington Taranaki Maoris are planning a deputation to the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, and a telegram to the Queen in a bid to make the Government stand by the findings of the Waitangi Tribunal.

They want the Government to adhere to a finding of the tribunal that effluent from the Motunui syntheticfuel plant should flow through the Waitara waste outlet.

They decided to send a deputation and a telegram during a week-end meeting on the Manukorihi marae at Waitara which was attended by more than 300 people. The telegram will ask the Queen to honour her ancestor’s “absolute” agreement with the Maori fishing grounds. The meeting was strong in opposition to an ocean outfall at Motunui. Local Maoris believe it could threaten traditional fishing grounds along the

coast. The leader of the Manu Motuhake Party, Mr Matiu Rata, said yesterday that the party , would not present a petition to the Prince and Princess of Wales at Waitangi next month even if it had the opportunity. Mr Rata said presenting a petition calling for ratification of the Treaty of Waitangi was now irrelevant because of the Government’s treatment of the Waitangi Tribunal report.
