Chess draws strong field

Adrian Lloyd (Christchurch) and Jonathon Sarfati (Wellington), with 5% points out of a possible seven, were first equal in the national junior chess championship played during Easter in Christchurch. Lloyd took the title by a narrow margin on the count back and won the right to represent New Zealand either in the world junior tournament to be held in France or in the Asian junior, and Sarfati can play in the tournament not selected by the winner. The national junior championship is restricted to players aged under 20. It drew a strong field from Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui, Timaru and Christchurch. Lloyd, who had twice previously won thq title, found the going hard this year and his count-back margin could not have been closer. Martin Dreyer (Auckland) took third place on a count back. He was unbeaten, scoring three wins and four draws. The director of play for the tournament was the president of the Canterbury Chess Club, Mr Geoff Davies.
