Fitness track open soon

The Big M Fitness track round Hagley Park will be opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, on April 23. The track is based on the popular European and American trim trails and incorporates 18 exercise stations round the jogging track in north Hagley Park. The aim is to allow participants to exercise the main muscle groups of the body while jogging. Construction materials used in building the 18 exercise stations will require only occasional maintenance. The track starts at the Armagh Street bridge and progresses round the northern perimeter of the park to the Riccarton Road roundabout and back along the south side of Victoria Lake to the. starting point. Each station is signposted with information on what to do, how to do it, and three levels of repetition. Exercises to be done at some of the stations include a chin-up bar, vault bar, balance beam, gymnastic rings and other equipment for sit-ups, push-ups, stepups and stretching exercises. , The fitness track was built by the north-west

Christchurch branch of the Kiwanis International Club in association with the parks and recreation department of the Christchurch City Council. Immediately after the official opening a competition will be run over the track. A number of sports and news media people will' complete one lap of the track, working at the lowest level of repetitions on each of the 18 pieces of equipment. The public will be encouraged to enter a competition where they estimate the fastest time by one of the competitors round the track. After this competition the public will be encouraged to try the track themselves.
