Head-on collision kills two

Two motor-cyclists were killed when these machines (above) collided head-on on the old Main North Road, just north of the Waimakariri River bridge, about 5.30 p.m. yesterday. The rider of the smaller Honda 200 cu cm machine (right) was Nigel Eric Pithie, aged 17, of Kaiapoi. The other man, aged 33, had been riding north with members of the Highway 61 motor-cycle group, the police Mid. His name had not been released because the police had not been able to reach his next-of-kin. Both'men were killed instantly, according to St John ambulancemen. The police are making further inquiries into the accident. A police spokesman Mid that the other . motorcyclists in the Highway 61 group would be interviewed. Any witnesses to the accident should get in touch with the fatal accident inquiry office at the Central Police Station. ___
