Freak, fatal accident

PA Masterton Gale-force winds have been blamed for a freak, fatal road accident 7km north of Eketahuna on State highway 2 late on Tuesday afternoon, when a half-ton canopy blew off a -truck and crushed a car travelling in the opposite direction. A pasenger in the car was killed. She was Rebecca Culling, aged 81, of Waipukurau. The car was being driven by her niece, Mrs Sylvia Wildermoth, of Carterton, who was treated at Pahiatua Hospital for head injuries and a broken arm. Mrs Wildermoth’s daughter, aged three, slept through the accident and was uninjured. Mrs Culling had been travelling to a family reunion at Carterton, and was to have attended a wedding in Australia this week-end.
