S.I. INVADED’ IN SOUTHERN SAFARI
About 1050 servicemen from the NewZealand, Australian and British Armies took part in a battalion group exercise in the Mackenzie Country early in March. Known as Southern Safari, this is the annual exercise for the Burnham-based 2nd/lst Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, and brings together other units in support of the battalion. About 120 soldiers from 107 Battery, 4 Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery took part in Southern Safari 83. They were joined by soldiers of D Company of the 2nd/7th Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Gurkha Rifles, based in Hong Kong. The 10-day exercise was based on a scenario that depicted the South Island being invaded by forces from the North Island. It was designed to familiarise the soldiers with the skills of withdrawal. As well as other Army units supporting the exercise, the R.N.Z.A.F. provided two Sioux and three Iroquois helicopters and their ground crews for the duration of the exercise. Air strikes were also performed by Skyhawk aircraft from Ohakea. The exercise was commanded by Colonel L. G. Williams, the Commander of the Third Task Force Region. The pictures show:—
