This portrait of the late Dame Ngaio Marsh, showing her as she was during the last year of her life, has been given to the Robert
McDougall Art Gallery by its painter, Mrs Vy Elsom, a friend of Dame Ngaio for many years. Mrs Elsom had started
the portrait some years ago, and brought it up to date after Dame Ngaio’s death last year. . Dame Ngaio had seen and liked the unfinished portrait, said Mrs Elsom, who is the mother of Jonathan Elsom, the Christchurch actor. Mrs Elsom is a well
, known portrait painter ! whose 1977 portrait of the i Queen, done during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year, I hangs in the City of Lan- ■ caster. It was commissioned > by the member of Parliai ment for Lancaster, and was painted from official photographs chosen by 1 Jonathan Elsom.
