Joint stamp issue

Sir,—Reporter’s Diary (February 4) had reported the issue of the commemorative stamp for C.E.R. with Australia. On behalf of our lunch-time discussion group I endorse the statements of M. J. Sim and Co. (February 8). We can well believe that the stamp was designed and printed in Melbourne because surely no selfrespecting New Zealand designer would have placed the symbol of his/her country in such a demeaning and subservient position to an animal which apparently is good for cat and dog food but little else. We would like to know who it was in New Zealand that gave his/her assent and approval to the design? Or was it not presented to New Zealand authorities for approval? That would be hard to believe but stranger things have happened. A kiwi with cricket bat rampant astride kangaroo would have been more appropriate (but perhaps we should not chirp too soon on that one) or bird and animal side by side looking into a golden future. — Yours, etc., N. L. SKILTON. February 9, 1983.
