Four years prison for manslaughter

PA Auckland A market gardener. Mack Herewini Taaka. was yesterday sentenced to four years jail for the manslaughter of his best friend and cousin. Taaka, aged 22, had earlier been found guilty by a jury in the High Court at Auckland of killing Hongi Browne by shooting him at pointblank range with a shotgun during a party at Pukekohe in December, 1981. Last year. Taaka was found guilty of murdering his cousin but that conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal which ordered a new trial. At his second trial, last December, the jury found Taaka guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. Taaka raised a defence of provocation claiming he was provoked because Browne had attempted to have inter-

course with his (Taaka's) wife. Sentencing Taaka. Mr Justice Thorp said it was one of the more, serious cases of manslaughter. He took into account that Taaka had already spent more than a year in custody.
