Call for projects

The Government had not been able to give any assurances about work for big Christchurch engineering companies in spite of representations since December, said the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mr M. A. Connelly. yesterday. Mr Connelly was commenting on a report that Andersons Engineering proposes to lay off about 14 engineers because of lack of orders.

Mr Connelly said that the Government should take a lead from the Australian Federal Government, which had announced that work on the railway from Alice Springs to Darwin, first proposed in 1910, would go ahead.'

"The housing shortage should be tackled. Deferred and delayed projects such as the Christchurch Hospital building programme should be brought forward and put to tender; the electrification of the South Island and North Island Main Trunk line should proceed." said Mr Connelly.
