Double Jay proves too good for The Dimple

By

J. J. BOYLE

Double Jay completed a rewarding double for the meeting by winning the C.J.C. Breeders’ Stakes in style at Riccarton yesterday.

It was a race dominated, it seemed, by last year’s winner. The’Dimple, arid the Southland mare improved a remarkably consistent record by finishing second. But The Dimple's rider. Ali Robinson, said it all when he commented: "Every chance. The other mare was 100 good." Double Jay. in the hands of the Riccarton apprentice. Kevin Burnett. dashed through an inside gap early in the run home and won by two lengths. The Dimple carried her top weight of 58kg gamely to the end. but she was no

closer to the winner then than she had been at the 800 metres. This was Double Jay's eighth win for Miss June and Mr Leicester Woods, of Christchurch. and the Double Speed mare, which stands no more than 15 hands with shoes on. has now earned close to $33,000. Double Jay is raced on lease from Mr Gavin Inch, of Oxford. If her racing is wound down this season she will be mated next spring with Palatable which, like her sire. Double Speed, stands at Mr

Mick Murfitt's Riccarton Stud. Double Jay was the first living foal from Timothea, a daughter of Greek God. Kevin Burnett. Double Jay's successful partner in three successive wins this summer, is 18 and was enjoying the 18th win of his career yesterday. He was able to settle Double Jay into a snug position three places back on the inside after Another Story was taken into a clear lead at about half way. The Dimple was travelling well in the next rails position down the

field, but she could not find the sharpness and acceleration to stay within challenging distance when young Burnett made his move on Double Jay. The Dimple's failure to win yesterday is unlikely to upset plans for a North Island campaign in the autumn. The Auckland Racing Club's Air New Zealand Stakes, on March 5. will probably be on her programme. Darnley Flight, the third favourite, was the best behind Double Jay and The Dimple, but not by much from Copernicus and Black Gull.
