NZPA London A $75.82 million contract to build a satellite which will have a close encounter in space with Halley's Comet has been signed in Bristol. The contract, between the European Space Agency and British Aerospace, is for Europe's first deep space probe. The Giotto explorer satellite will be launched in July, 1985, on an eight-month journey into space. Its 150-million kilometre mission will take it on a

four-hour rendezvous with the world's best known comet. The satellite will be launched during 15 days, in July, 1985, from Kourou, French Guiana. In its close encounter it will pass across the comet’s tail. - Travelling at a closing speed of 70 kilometres a second, the three-metre satellite will attempt to take colour photographs of the comet.
