Arthur Carman dies
PA Wellington The noted New Zealand cricket and rugby historian, Arthur Carman, died yesterday in a Wellington Hospital. He was 80. Mr. Carman collapsed two weeks ago at a Wellington Hospital Board meeting and had been in hospital since. He was elected to the board in 1935 and has been a member since, as well as serving extensively on various other local bodies. His main interest, however, was sport. He toured Britain as a rugby correspondent with the 1924 All Blacks and returned three years later with the New Zealand cricket team.
Soon after, he moved into a successful book-selling business. He was editor of the New Zealand Rugby Almanack from 1935 and in 1948 started the New Zealand Cricket Almanack which he produced since. As well as the almanacks, which became noted for their attention to statistical detail, Mr Carman published several books including a report on the 1924 All Black tour and a jointly-edited history of New Zealand rugby. Mr Carman, who was sentenced to 12 months jail in 1941 for opposing wars on religious grounds, leaves a wife and five children.
