Combined youth camp

The Baptist Youth Ministries is the collective name given to the youth groups throughout New Zealand. Merrilyn Withers, the fulltime director for the Canter-bury-Westland branch, says that 15 Baptist churches will be involved with the Pebblebrook camp. As well there will be youth groups from Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian, Maori Evangelical fellowship, Methodist, Elim, and Brethren churches. Between 800 and 1000 people are expected to attend. "What we are aiming to do' is show teen-agers that they should not be ashamed to be a Christian,” Merrilyn says.

“We also hope that nonchurch teen-agers will be attracted to a camp of this type,” she says. Merrilyn maintains a close liaison between Baptist and other youth groups. Although the Pebblebrook camp has been the major project for Merrilyn this year, she has also been responsible for youth leadership training programmes, Easter camps, and sponsorship of overseas visitors such as the American author and marathon runner, Ann Kimell.

Any groups interested in the Pebblebrook camp can contact Merrilyn at Christchurch 65-426.
