Electrifying the - railways

Sir, — Clyde electricity for South Island rail system — an excellent idea. It is a clean, reasonably silent, inexhuastible system that uses indigenous energy and it has no ecology problems. We may not always be able to obtain overseas petroleum products which indicates a shorter potential economic life for existing systems except those using electricity. The message is to latch on to -.one of the few Russian good things — that is adopt a 10, 20 year or whatever plan to electrify our South Island main trunk. This part of New Zealand has a greater economic future than is obvious at the moment, so be prepared for and strive for the best long term priine mover of people and things. — Yours, etc., GORDON H. OLDHAM. November 15, 1982.
