Textbook review
NZPA Tokyo A special committee of Japanese educational experts has recommended that Japan respect the feelings of neighbouring countries in textbook accounts of recent Asian history. This recommendation should pave the way for removal of the offending passages that had sparked a regional diplomatic row recently. The Education Minister,
Mr Heiji Ogawa, whose visit to China had to be cancelled at the height of the controversy in August, has formally accepted the experts' recommendation, calling it an “appropriate proposal.” The recommendation allows textbook editors to proceed with the changes, as promised by the Government, as early as next year, one year earlier than the Government had said.
