Magazine Bay marina opened
Warm north-westerly conditions greeted guests at the opening of the new Magazine Bay marina, near Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon.
The member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Ann Hercus, officially opened the new $750,000 marina. A smattering of boats were already berthed yesterday, and the Lyttelton Harbour Board expects boat owners to move in "progressively” during the next few weeks.
Mrs Hercus congratulated the board, which designed and built the 82-berth marina, for providing a “wonderful and unique facility.”
Mr John Bushell, the board’s chief engineer, must be proud of the facility into which he and his staff had put so much work, she said. Other speakers were the chairman of the Harbour Board, Captain A. R. Champion, the chairman of the board’s small craft committee, Mr J. E. Mannering, and the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr M. E. Foster. One of the marina’s features is a 300 m breakwater made of floating tyres. Modules of the tyres, which were pumped full of polyurethane foam for buoyancy, were lashed together to form the breakwater.
. . The marina took a year to complete. Each boat owner using the marina has paid between $6OOO and $9500 for a berth, which entitles him to 21. years berthage. Berths may be sold with Harbour Board approval.
