Test ends in draw

NZPA Perth The first cricket test between Australia and England fizzled to a draw in Perth.

At stumps on the final day, Australia was two for 73 in its second innings after a wagging England tail thwarted all hopes of a result.

England was all out for 358 five minutes before the tea adjournment, after Derek Randall had posted his fifth test century and the tailenders, Derek Pringle and Norman Cowans, had figured in a last-wicket partnership of 66.

The England innings ended with Norman Cowans being bowled leg before wicket to Greg Chappell for 36, with Derek Pringle not out 47. The players had gone to lunch at 252 for seven, with Australia even then having little chance of forcing a result in the game. Derek Randall’s 115, Bob Taylor’s 31 and the flourish of the taii-enders put the death knell on that hope. Randall had gone to lunch on 97 not out and in Lawson’s first over after he raised his 100, coming up in 233 minutes from 197 deliveries and including 10 fours.

It was his third test century in Australia and his twenty-sixth first-class 100. He had given a difficult chance to Graeme Wood on

Tuesday when he was six and was uncomfortable facing Lawson yesterday morning.
