Junior tennis in Timaru
Several of the prominent players from the Canterbury primary schools’ tennis championships last week-end will compete for higher honours in matches at Timaru on Sunday. Teams of boys and girls from Canterbury and South Canterbury will play an elimination contest for places in a provincial side to contest the Adidas teams’ event for 14-year-olds. This is a new event on the
junior tennis circuit, as far as the 14 years age group is concerned. The national final will also be held in Timaru, from January 9 to 12. The players from Canterbury are: Boys—Rodney Gray, Geoffrey Brightwell, Hamish Jamieson, Matthew Granger. Girls.—Lani Ratana, Joanna Lake, Fleur Howard, Mary-Jane Burke. Four 12-year-old boys have been chosen by the Canter-
bury Junior Lawn Tennis Association to compete in a round robin tournament with four South Canterbury boys, also next Sunday in Timaru. They are Royce McKean, Michael Smith, Andrew Batie and Julian Faulls. The winning boy will be known as the region’s “Little Davis Cupper” and will have the opportunity of attending the Davis Cup tie between New Zealand and Denmark next March.
