Accountancy course

Sir,—The statement made by D. E. Walker (November 6) regarding accountants reaching a state of oversupply is absolutely incorrect. The pity is that persons reading such a statement are liable to take it as being correct. All one has to do is to ask a firm advertising for an accountant, either as an employee or as a partner, as to what the response has been. Replies I have received from firms right around New Zealand say that the response has been practically nil. Many firms of chartered accountants, especially in-the South Island, are desperately seeking additional partners, but cannot obtain them. Employment agencies only laugh when requested to obtain an accountant, as they know that it is practically an impossible assignment I have recently seen a letter from the Minister of Education

in which he acknowledges the present serious shortage of accountants and agrees that there will still be a shortage in five years time. — Yours, etc., P. ROSELLI. Westport, November 8, 1982.
