Tomato growers protest about C.E.R.
Canterbury glasshouse tomato ■ growers have sent a telegram of protest to 10 South Island National and Labour members of Parliament protesting about the C.E.R. agreement between New Zealand and Australia.
The telegram says that the growers are angered and dismayed at the apparent disregard of their concerns in the final agreement. Access levels for tomatoes must be renegotiated back to a realistic position, says the telegram. It was sent by Mr B. D. Gargiulo, president of the. Canterbury Growers’ Society on behalf of more than 50 large growers of glasshouse tomatoes in the Canterbury district. The growers are worried that tomatoes may be produced more cheaply in Australia than they can be here, particularly because most Australian growers do not have to heat their glasshouses.
