Jeans, casual wear for men and boys
Galvins Bargain Stores. Ltd. has opened a much larger menswear .shop in Riccarton, on the corner of Riccarton Road and Clarence Street, beside one of the busiest intersections in the Christchurch urban area. The firm's managing director. Mr John Galvin, says there was a need for it to have a store “of some size” in the north-west of the city, close to the university, some big high schools and the substantial Blenheim Road industrial area. The business started in
Christchurch with budgettype clothing, such as drill trousers and day-to-day shirts and jackets. There are now four shops specialising in men's and boys’ jeans and other casual clothing. Jeans are now acceptable almost anywhere for young people, and about half of Galvins stock is jeans — Western and dress jeans, both straight and tapered, in blue, khaki, brown and cream. The main brands of jeans and cords carried are Levis, Amco, Izona and Skin, plus Galvins own Flag brand, and
the tops to go with them include such American franchise brands as Lightning Bolt, Ocean Pacific and Golden Breed. The range of stock is far wider, though, then these few names suggest. There are T-shirts in stripes and in plains with or without toning trims, and novelty T-shirts. There are crew-neck. Vneck and collared surf shirts, heavier sweat shirts with long sleeves, Western shirts with short or long sleeves, and brushed cotton shirts in checks.
Island casual shirts are “in big” this summer, according to Mr Bob McDonald, manager of the'new store, and showerproofed mountaineer shirts in pure wool are never “out.” Windcheater and "club” jackets, too, are always in demand, and there is a selection of Golden Breed, light-weight, bomber jackettype shirts, lined or unlined, in polished cotton. For hot days, there are drill and denim shorts, Stubbies linen-look shorts, and Canterbury rugby-type shorts, in a range of colours. Long, white Stubbies-are designated “trotting drivers’ trousers,” and there is a large selection of sports trousers, some at standard prices and others on special. There is also a special in boxed business shirts of a wide variety of “top” brands. The brand names in briefs are Jockey, Underdaks and Riskies, and there is virtually every kind of sock — sports socks, walk socks, dress socks, gumboot socks and Submariner socks for
wearing in industrial-type work boots. Also in the heavy-duty line are seamen’s jerseys, while at the opposite- end of the. scale are Klipper summer night shirts, shorty pyjamas, towelling robes, and men’s and boys’ swim wear. There is a selection of
summer caps, towelling hats, visors, and "ten gallon straw •Stetsons,” a range of jandals and a good selection of belts. The manager,- Mr McDonald, is well-known for his friendly service from the previous, smaller Galvins store in Riccarton, and the hours there are now 9 a.m. to
5.30 p.m. on week days - with late night on Thursday, and Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The other Galvins stores are in the city south, on the Colombo-Tuam corner; north of Cathedral Square, .in Gloucester Street; and at New. Brighton, where Galvins
is open all day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9' p.m.
