Arts in brief Costumes for hire
Many of the costumes that have appeared on the stage of the Court Theatre in the past 11 years are now available to the public through the theatre’s new costume hire service. Situated in the basement of the old physics building in the Arts Centre, the costume hire service will operate initially Monday and Friday only, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Several hundred costumes are being shifted from the theatre’s storerooms to the new space. They are being sorted into rough period classifications including premedieval, medieval and Shakespearian. There is also a limited-range of traditional fancy dress outfits a range the theatre hopes to extend. The hire service has been
started by the Court Supporters and comes from a suggestion by visiting designer, Murree Hutchinson. Both the Fortune Theatre in Dunedin and Mercury Theatre in Auckland already run successful hire services. Previously, the theatre has loaned mainly to other entertainment organisations and after the considerable sorting and cataloging has been done this service will be continued and expanded. The Court Supporters have spent three months clearing the old physics laboratory,, painting the walls and hanging pipes to accommodate the costumes and they will staff the service on Fridays and Mondays. The hire service opens on Friday, November 19.
